The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) will take part in its first international event next Sunday 9 June when it holds its first Great Global Greyhound walk.

The Great Global Greyhound Walk is a free annual sighthound walking event that aims to raise awareness of the sighthound breeds, which includes greyhounds, whippets and borzois.

The Great Global Greyhound Walk brings together thousands of fans of retired greyhounds across the globe. It originated in the UK and is now, in its 10th year, a world-wide event.

QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett said the walk was a great opportunity to further promote the positive image of greyhounds as pets.

“This will be a chance to meet other greyhound owners and walk together as a group as a show of support for these great dogs,” he said.

“With your help we could help to make this global event even bigger than it’s been before, and create more impact on the lives of retired greyhounds all over the world.

“Support for the Queensland event has been strong with more than 50 dogs registered to walk with their owners next Sunday.

“I’d encourage as many greyhound owners as possible to attend, as we want to show the rest of the world we can bring in big numbers.

“GAP will provide the total number of walkers to the Great Global Walk organisers who aim to make this year the best yet.”

The GAP team will be available to provide advice on adopting and fostering a GAP greyhound, green collar assessments and greyhounds in general.

The GAP Qld event will be held at Decker Park, 18 Twenty Fifth Ave, Brighton on Sunday, 9 June at 10am.

Owners and their sighthounds are asked to meet at the Rotunda in Decker Park to start the walk along the Brighton foreshore.
