Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) foster carers play an integral role in helping retired greyhounds transition to life as a pet as they provide essential care and enrichment activities for the greyhounds.

Foster carers receive support and advice, including a training manual, skills sessions, supplies, dog equipment and 24-hour access to vet care through an out-of-hours phone number in case of emergencies.

Townsville foster carer Isabella encourages those considering fostering a greyhound to take the first step and submit their application.

“I started fostering after my friends adopted GAP greyhounds, I could see their love for the breed and how much support they were provided by the GAP team,” she said.

“Fostering greyhounds has been a rewarding experience, I have learnt so much and continue to learn more with each greyhound I foster.

“Each greyhound I’ve fostered had a unique personality and their own quirks, I’ve had greyhounds that are super cuddly and just want to be under my feet, others have loved water or just want to sleep all day.

“Fostering has also been flexible around my student life. Coming up to exams, I can take time off fostering to focus on my studies.

The North Queensland GAP team have been supportive of this and work with me to make this possible.

“As GAP greyhounds are already trained, they are also well behaved and can be low maintenance.

“I have fallen in love with greyhounds, and I highly recommend that anyone considering fostering a greyhound submits their application.

If you’re interested in fostering a greyhound, you can apply on the GAP website.
