Dog-lovers who have been dreaming about adopting a retired racing greyhound have the chance to meet their potential family member thanks to a series of free community events celebrating National Greyhound Adoption Month.

Celebrated annually throughout the month of April, National Greyhound Adoption Month is dedicated to helping retired racing greyhounds to find loving homes.

To mark the occasion, the Queensland Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP QLD) will promote the long and lovable canine, allowing community members an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of adopting a retired racing dog.

QRIC Deputy Commissioner Chantal Raine said National Greyhound Adoption Month is an opportunity to educate people on the benefits of adopting greyhounds as pets.

“Greyhounds make great family pets. Our GAP team works to match the right greyhound to the right family and home.”

“We consider both the dog’s personality and the needs of the adopter – there really is a greyhound for everyone.”

“We encourage anyone looking for a new best fur-iend to meet our greyhounds at the upcoming events,” she said.

All GAP greyhounds are health and behaviourally assessed before being made available for adoption. GAP greyhounds are also fully vaccinated and treated for the prevention of fleas, ticks and worms.

GAP QLD ran its Townsville Homeward Hounds on Saturday 29 March and will run its Brisbane Homeward Hounds event on Saturday 12 April, allowing dog lovers to meet their new potential family member and to learn more about becoming part of the GAP adoption community.

The event, to be held at Albion Park Raceway, will provide the community with an opportunity to:

  • Pat, cuddle and walk on leash with adoptable greyhounds (10am and 11am). The GAP team will be on hand to discuss all things greyhounds. If you’re thinking about adopting or fostering, we can answer all your questions.
  • A children’s Easter-themed colouring-in station will be set up (Easter art and colouring in greyhound booklet).
  • Grab a photo in front of the Easter-themed photo wall to capture those first-adoption moments with your new Easter buddy.
