Local Foster Carer Craig Opens His Heart and Home to Nine Greyhounds Through GAP Program

Meet Craig, a dedicated foster carer whose compassion has transformed the lives of nine greyhounds-and counting. Through the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP), Craig has welcomed retired racing dogs into his home, providing them with love, care, and a stepping stone to their forever families.

Craig’s journey began in 2018 after learning about the GAP foster program. Despite a busy work life that once made pet ownership seem impossible, he decided to apply to foster greyhounds.

“From my very first interaction with the GAP team, it was clear that the comfort, safety, and wellbeing of each greyhound was their priority,” Craig said.

The program’s thorough matching process ensures each dog’s needs align with the foster carer’s lifestyle and home environment. Over the years, Craig has fostered nine unique greyhounds, each bringing joy and companionship into his life.

Though it’s always bittersweet to see them leave, he finds comfort knowing they are well-prepared for their new homes. “I give them all the love and support I can, and then I know they’ve found their forever home,” he said.

Craig admits many of the dogs have captured his heart, and he would happily adopt them all. However, he finds fulfillment in helping these beautiful dogs build confidence and adapt to life as beloved pets before they move on to their permanent families. The cycle continues as GAP’s Foster Coordinator keeps him informed about new greyhounds ready for fostering, ensuring Craig’s foster story is far from over.

Through his commitment, Craig exemplifies the powerful impact foster carers have in giving retired racers a second chance at life, proving that sometimes, opening your home can change many lives for the better.
