National Black Dog Day: Celebrating Black Greyhounds

October 1 is National Black Dog Day, a chance to celebrate the beauty, loyalty, and love that black dogs bring into our lives, and to shine a light on an issue known as “black dog syndrome.” This term refers to the longer adoption wait times that black-coated greyhounds often face compared to their lighter-coloured friends.

Sadly, black dogs can be overlooked for a variety of reasons. Some believe they’re harder to photograph or less eye-catching in adoption listings, while old myths and superstitions have unfairly cast them in a negative light.

But anyone who has lived with a black greyhound will tell you the truth: they’re every bit as gentle, affectionate, and goofy as any other grey. With their sleek coats and soulful eyes, they’re also incredibly striking, regal even! For GAP adopter Chris, welcoming a black greyhound into his home has been nothing short of life-changing.

“Judy came into our lives almost a year ago and she has touched so many lives in such a positive way, she is just the happiest girl. Being a black girl, Judy’s coat shines and glows in the sun. She’s radiant and it just suits her epic personality. Others literally marvel at her beauty and her coat, and she gets compliments everywhere she goes.”

“Being a black dog, I got the sense from her that she was overlooked during her time available for adoption, but it genuinely feels like she thanks me every day for the life we have given her and makes me feel so special for having her in my life. Judy has so many greyhound characteristics, but she is so unique in her own way, and I can’t help but feel it’s because she is a black beauty.” Chris said.

National Black Dog Day is a reminder that coat colour doesn’t define a dog. What really matters is temperament, personality, and lifestyle compatibility. Black greyhounds deserve the same chance at a loving home as any other.

If you’re ready to adopt, GAP Queensland can help you find the perfect match, whether black, brindle, fawn, blue or white. By opening your heart to a black greyhound, you’ll not only gain a wonderful companion but also help break the cycle of black dog syndrome.
