26 Greys Later: A fostering journey full of love

When it comes to opening their hearts and home to greyhounds, few do it with more love than Mike and Kathy, a devoted couple who recently welcomed their 26th foster greyhound, Cosmo, through the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP QLD).
Their fostering journey began 9 years ago with their first greyhound named Jessica, whose gentle nature won them over instantly. Since then, their home has been a revolving door of wagging tails, snoot boops, backyard zoomies and countless special moments. From timid newcomers learning what home life means, to playful and inquisitive characters who take over the couch in no time, each greyhound has left behind special imprints of memories in Mike and Kathy’s lives.
The pair say fostering has been one of the most rewarding things they’ve ever done.
“Every greyhound has their own story and personality,” Mike says.
“Greyhounds are such wonderful companions to have in our homes. Fostering has introduced us to so many people and dogs, and it’s always exciting to meet the next greyhound and hear how our past fosters are thriving with their new families.
“We’ve loved taking them to care homes, where they’re greeted like royalty, bringing smiles to everyone they meet. From visits to Bunnings and cafés to car rides and social outings, every experience helps them grow and flourish.”
Fostering is a rewarding way to make a real difference in a greyhound’s life, giving them a home where they can gain confidence and learn essential home-life skills. Carers get to enjoy their unique personalities and playful antics, all while helping prepare the dogs for their forever families.
As Christmas time approaches, the couple hopes others will experience that same joy through GAP QLD’s Host a Hound for the Holidays program, a wonderful way to foster and house a greyhound over the festive season, with all food, bedding, veterinary care and support provided.
It’s a wonderful way for greyhounds to enjoy the festive season in a cozy home, surrounded by companionship.
After all, as Mike and Kathy know best, there’s nothing quite like a greyhound to fill your home – and your heart.
