A home for the holidays – retired racing dogs foster appeal

When their racing careers are over, greyhounds are commonly adopted into loving homes by dog-lovers keen to embrace the gentle breed.

But for those not-yet-adopted, a new temporary home via fostering is the ultimate gift.

This festive season, the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) Queensland, delivered by Queensland Racing Integrity Commission, is inviting Queenslanders to “Host a Hound for the Holidays”.

Lisa Kohler, GAP Rehoming Manager said holiday fostering offers more than just a temporary home for greyhounds.

“Hosting a greyhound helps these dogs transition from racing life to a loving home environment and gives them the best possible start with their future families,” she said.

“These gentle, affectionate dogs will get a taste of family life while preparing for their forever homes, and foster carers gain a truly rewarding experience in return.

“Every year, many wonderful families and individuals open their homes to greyhounds over Christmas and thankfully during what can be an expensive period, there’s not a great expense involved.”

Ms Kohler said those fostering a greyhound over the festive period receive all necessary supplies including food, bedding, collars, leads, and veterinary care throughout.

“We’re encouraging everyone to consider welcoming a greyhound into their home for the holidays,” she said.

“People fostering greyhounds often turn their temporary arrangement into a permanent one and go on to officially adopt their greyhound for an investment of as little as GAP’s $100 adoption fee.”
