Participant Rehoming Program (PRP)

The aim of the program is to rehome as many retired greyhounds as possible.

This opportunity allows participants to rehome their retired greyhounds from their own kennels with the support of the GAP team.

GAP works with racing industry participants to ensure that retired greyhounds are set up for success and have the best opportunity to find homes.

How does the program work?

  1. Retire your greyhound – once greyhounds have been accepted on the program they must not race.
  2. Have your retired greyhound undergo the following procedures:
  • Desexing
  • Vaccinations
  • Dental scale and polish

Greyhounds presented to the program must have evidence that they are heartworm and hookworm free. Your retired greyhound maybe eligible for the Racing Queensland Greyhound Retirement Readiness Scheme.

3. To give your retired greyhound the best possible chance of rehoming, information on socialising your greyhound can be found here.

4. Complete the online submission form for your retired racer and submit it to the GAP team.

5. The GAP team will contact you to book a mobile green collar assessment and medical check at your property.

6. Once your greyhound has successfully passed the green collar assessment, the greyhound will be listed on the GAP website ready for adoption.

7. If your retired greyhound does not pass our assessment on the day, the GAP team will offer you the opportunity to rebook an assessment at your property and provide training advice to assist with a successful assessment. You can also adopt your greyhound to a third party. See below for more details.

8. The GAP team will assess adoption applications and match adopters to available dogs.

GAP’s no-fault returns policy: Participant obligations

Please note that GAP offers adopters a no-fault return policy within seven days. If a dog is returned from an adopter during this time period, trainers are obligated to take the dog back and hold them until the next adoption match. If this occurs, we will continue to display your dog on the GAP website to promote adoptions.

Third-party adoptions

If you decide to rehome your greyhound to a third party after it has been accepted into the GAP, you must advise GAP of your decision, so we can remove the dog’s available listing from our adoption website.

Please remember to fill out a retirement form, including the dog’s retirement to a third party.

While waiting to be adopted, racing participants agree to:

  • Not race the retired greyhound;
  • Continue to socialise the dog;
  • Continue with heartworm/worming preventative treatments;
  • Ensure the dog remains in good condition;
  • If the dog tested positive for heartworm or hookworm, it cannot be rehomed. In this case, the dog will be returned to the participant submitting the greyhound for treatment; and
  • If a greyhound is returned within seven days of adoption, it will be returned to the participant to wait for a new adoption application.

QRIC agrees to:

  • List the retired greyhound for adoption on GAP website and social media channels
  • Match the retired greyhound to suitable applicants
  • When a home is found, QRIC will:
    • Collect greyhound from participant’s property;
    • Recheck for heartworm and hookworm (if positive, the retired greyhound will be return to the responsible person for necessary treatment);
    • Bathe and prepare retired greyhound for adoption;
    • Transport the retired greyhound to adoption home and facilitate the adoption; and
    • Provide post-adoption support to the adopting family.
