A temporary ‘retirement home’ for former racing greyhounds will be on show when the Greyhound Adoption Program Queensland’s (GAP) kennel doors open on Saturday 28 March 2026.
Those keen to explore fostering and adoption opportunities or simply curious to meet the gentle breed will be welcomed to go ‘behind the scenes’ at the free community Open Day at the Churchable kennels, based in the Lockyer Valley region.
GAP Rehoming Manager Lisa Kohler said the event, timed ahead of April’s National Greyhound Adoption Month, is free and open to the community.
“It’s a perfect day out for families and individuals alike, and just one-and-a-half hours into a scenic drive from Brisbane,” she said.
“It’s also a must-attend for anyone curious or considering welcoming a greyhound into their home.
“There’s no better time to see our amazing facility and meet our passionate staff taking care of our greyhounds and preparing them for their futures.”
On offer at the facility is indoor heated and air-conditioned kennels, sensory garden, outdoor runs for exercise and play, a learning space, and health care in the form of a vet clinic. There’s also areas offering the greyhound’s exposure to stairs they’d find in a family home to practice on, and a mix of different obstacles.
Lisa said while staff love the dogs, everyone hopes their stay is only temporary.
“Nothing beats a home environment – where they become a member of a family,” said the Rehoming Manager.
“That’s the most rewarding thing for us – saying goodbye when a greyhound is successfully matched and integrated into a new family unit. It’s why we’re here, and it’s our highest priority.”
At the Open Day event, GAP’s adoption and foster teams will be on hand to guide visitors through their work firsthand, as well as:
- a guided tour of the Churchable kennel facility, nestled among the trees near Atkinsons Dam
- a greyhound health and first aid session with the GAP healthcare team, covering topics such as recognising arthritis, dental disease, common gastrointestinal issues, and simple bandaging techniques
- all registered participants will receive a mini first aid kit
- collection of Host a Hound for National Greyhound Adoption Month greyhounds https://gapqld.com.au/latest-news/news/gap-celebrates-national-greyhound-adoption-month
- pats, cuddles, and on-leash walks with adoptable greyhounds
- bonus: all adoptions finalised at the Open Day will receive a free bag of dog food
