The invaluable contribution of foster carers will be celebrated in June during National Foster a Pet Month by Queensland’s leading greyhound adoption program – GAP.

The Brisbane greyhound community – including those who’ve fostered or adopted former racing hounds will gather for a special community greyhound walk and appreciation event in north Brisbane, hosted by the Greyhound Adoption Program Queensland (GAP).

GAP’s Rehoming Manager Lisa Kohler said the GAP Greyhound Walk for Foster a Pet Month will take place on Saturday 27 June at Leslie Patrick Park, Arana Hills.

“We’re shinning a light on the importance of foster families by bringing together past and present foster carers, adopters, and greyhound enthusiasts in this new GAP event,” she said.

“But despite the focus on thanking our valuable foster carers, we’re also welcoming anyone who may be considering fostering or adopting a greyhound to join us on the day.

“We love to do our part in giving recognition to the important role foster families play in helping retired racing greyhounds transition into life as beloved pets.”

The program manager said foster carers provide more than just temporary homes for greyhounds – and are in fact one of the most important parts of the rehoming journey.

“Foster families help dogs prepare for their future adoption in a way no one else can, helping them learn household routines, build confidence and adjust to life beyond the racetrack,” she added.

“They play a vital role in that successful transition into pet life.

“By welcoming a greyhound into their home, our foster carers provide invaluable support, helping each dog build confidence, learn household routines and showcase their unique personality, all of which contributes to finding the right home for them.

“Their support also provides practical insight into each dog's personality, allowing our GAP team to match greyhounds with suitable family homes.”

One of those recently fostering a GAP greyhound is carer Natascha Scarff, who reflected on her early relationship with greyhound Rustus.

“It's the small milestones — the first proper zoomies, the first time they settle on the beach,” she said.

“It’s knowing you're helping them find their forever family while they bring so much happiness to yours.”

Fellow foster mum Katie Bovill, currently fostering Shorty, added her reflections.

“Fostering makes our house feel like a home,” she said.

Host a Hound for National Foster Month

In addition to celebrations and the ‘thank you’ walk event on Saturday 27 June, GAP is also currently looking for families to open their homes temporarily through our Host a Hound for National Foster a Pet Month program.

Applications are now open, with foster hounds ready to join their host families from mid-July.

GAP provides everything foster carers need, including food, bedding, equipment, and veterinary care, making it easy for people to open their homes to a greyhound in transition.
