FAQs

Can I rehome my greyhound to a third party or through another adoption agency?

You can rehome your greyhound to a third party or through another adoption agency. As per GAR Rule 22, complete the retirement form and provide the required information about your dog’s retirement to a third party or through another adoption agency within 10 days.

Remember, if you decide to rehome your greyhound to a third party or through another adoption agency after it has been accepted into the Participant Rehoming Program (PRP), please notify the GAP team of your decision, so we can remove the dog’s available adoption profile from our GAP website.

How should I prepare my greyhound for life in a pet home?

As the owner and/or trainer of the greyhound, there are steps you should take to make sure your greyhound can be successfully transitioned from racing to retirement and rehomed.  As soon as the decision to retire is made, greyhounds should be desexed and should undergo a dental scale and polish. Racing Queensland’s Retirement Readiness Scheme offers financial support to participants preparing their greyhound for retirement. Can I still rehome my greyhound through GAP?

GAP Queensland currently has a pause on intake into our kennels, but you can still partner with GAP to rehome your greyhound through the Participant Rehoming Program (PRP). The PRP allows participants to rehome their retired greyhounds through their own kennels with the support of the GAP team. Once you have retired your greyhound and it has undergone the required health and dental checks, fill out an application form and book a green collar assessment. Our GAP assessor will travel to your facility to undertake the green collar assessment, or you may attend the GAP facility for an assessment by invitation only.

When your greyhound has successfully passed the assessment, its adoption profile will be listed on the GAP website for adoption. The GAP team will assess adoption applications and match your retired greyhound with the right home. Learn more about the PRP process here.

Retired greyhounds adopted through the GAP adoption process will be given a green collar. Participants are welcome to adopt to a third party, but please note that green collars are only available for dogs who are rehomed through the GAP. Learn more about green collar assessments here.

What do I need to do to prepare my greyhound to be rehomed with GAP?

To enter your greyhound into GAP’s Participant Rehoming Program (PRP), you must complete the following requirements:

  • Complete the online application form
  • Submit current desexed certificate, current C5 vaccination certificate, undergo a dental scale and polish, and be negative for heartworm/hookworm.
  • Once all paperwork has been received, the GAP regional co-ordinator will contact you to organise a time for a green collar assessment of your retired greyhound at your property.
  • When your dog is matched to a home and ready to be collected by GAP staff ensure your retired greyhound is:
    • clean, flea and tick free;
    • negative to heartworm and hookworm;
    • in good condition;
    • free from injury and illness; and
    • ensure that you have submitted a greyhound notification of retirement in accordance with GA Rule 22.

Where is GAP located?

GAP Queensland operates out of a kennel facility at  Churchable in southeast Queensland. The kennel facility is licenced to house 100 dogs.

North Queensland GAP has no kennel facility and solely offers the Participant Rehoming Program (PRP). If you are close to these locations and would like to get involved in the PRP, fill out an application form.

We encourage participants in other areas of the state to rehome through a third party or another rehoming agency.
